Corrona: Leveraging 'Big Data' for Improved Patient Outcomes
Most scientists, by nature and by training, are in one business: Observe a knowledge gap, and fill it. With that in mind, in 2001, the founders of the Consortium of Rheumatology Researchers of North America (Corrona) LLC recognized that there was no database — independent of big pharma — that collected clinical data from both rheumatologists and patients on the safety and efficacy of emerging drug therapies.

Sodium consumption increases GI bloating
Although patients on a high-fiber diet experience increased bloating, researchers from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine found that if they lowered their sodium intake, their bloating decreased.
Ironwood reports positive results for IBS-C drug
Ironwood Pharmaceuticals announce positive data from a phase 3b study to determine the efficacy of Linzess for the treatment of multiple abdominal symptoms in patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, according to a press release.
Commentary: FMT safety alert ‘brought to light many questions’
The recent FDA warning due to the death of a patient following an investigational fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) brought to light many questions and concerns. The biggest question being, “In what situation did these deaths occur?” The report indicates that two immunocompromised patients received FMT and developed a multi-drug resistant infection and one of them died. We do not know if this FMT was done to help treat Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection, or for a different indication.

SAN DIEGO — Patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders who underwent 3-month multidisciplinary treatment experienced superior symptom improvement compared with patients who only saw a gastroenterologist, according to data presented at Digestive Disease Week.
Patients with sucrase-isomaltase deficiency less likely to respond to low-FODMAP diet for IBS-D
SAN DIEGO — Roughly half of patients who go on a low-FODMAP diet to treat diarrhea predominant irritable bowel syndrome do not respond to the change in diet. According to data presented at Digestive Disease Week, many of those patients could have a genetic variant that causes a deficiency of the sucrase-isomaltase enzyme.
