Patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis often elect to undergo early surgery
More than half of patients with uncomplicated diverticulitis undergo elective surgery after fewer than three episodes despite recommendations to delay elective colon resection, recent study data found.
Risk for delirium increases in older patients following gastrointestinal surgery
Postoperative delirium was found to be a common occurrence in older patients who underwent gastrointestinal surgery. Patients who experienced postoperative delirium also trended toward longer hospital stays and risk for dying earlier than patients who did not have postoperative delirium.

Surgical management may lower QALYs in patients with recurrent diverticulitis
Elective colonic resection surgery did not improve quality-adjusted life-years when performed after two episodes of diverticulitis. After three episodes of diverticulitis, quality-adjusted life-years were similar with surgical, conservative or medical treatment strategies. Rates of abdominal symptoms were lower in the patients that received the medical treatment strategy.
Outcomes superior with laparoscopic vs. open colorectal surgery
Laparoscopic surgery was found to be more cost-effective and to produce better patient outcomes, compared to open surgery, for patients who underwent elective colorectal resections.
