In a video exclusive, Craig Munroe, MD, discusses how recent revisions to quality indicators for colonoscopy from ACG and ASGE may improve patient outcomes by raising the standards of the procedure.

“Changes to the recommendations with this most recent manuscript include priority quality indicators,” Munroe, global lead of medical affairs for the GI-EndoTherapy division at Olympus Corp., told Healio. “These include adenoma detection, sessile serrated detection rate, the rate of using recommended screening and surveillance intervals, bowel prep adequacy and cecal intubation rate.”

Colonoscopy is highly operator dependent, Munroe said, and “benchmarking adenoma detection rate at 35% allows clinicians to meet the needs of their patients as new technologies enable better exams.” Raising the minimum ADR threshold may prevent development of colon cancer, he added.

In addition to the updated quality indicators, Munroe noted that the medical technology industry can help improve colonoscopy quality and patient outcomes by offering physicians the “newest innovations in colorectal cancer detection, treatment and follow-up,” allowing them to do their job to the best of their ability.

“The future is bright in our specialty as more innovation comes to market year over year,” Munroe said. “Our goal is to make people’s lives healthier, safer and more fulfilling.”
