Cincinnati Children’s has claimed the No. 1 spot in the United States for pediatric gastroenterology and GI surgery, according to the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.

“This is a wonderful recognition of our profound commitment as pediatric gastroenterologists and surgeons to improving the outcome for each and every child entrusted to our care, whether through world-class clinical programs, learning better for the child of the future through scientific discovery, quality improvement and subspecialty training, or engaging with communities near and far toward a vision of all children living healthy lives unburdened by digestive diseases,” Sean Moore, MD, director of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Cincinnati Children’s, told Healio.

“This bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-bench flow of information combined with the innovative culture and collaborative spirit [at Cincinnati Children’s] assure that we will continue to drive advances in GI and GI surgical care.” Dan von Allmen, MD

In its 18th year evaluating pediatric hospitals, U.S. News & World Report collected expert opinion from over 36,000 physicians and analyzed data from 108 children’s hospitals. The rankings now include 11 pediatric specialties, with this year’s addition of pediatric and adolescent behavioral health.

A total of 88 hospitals earned a “Best Hospitals” ranking in at least one specialty and 10 hospitals, including Cincinnati Children’s, made the Honor Roll for excellence in high-quality care.

“There are two primary things that set Cincinnati Children’s apart,” Dan von Allmen, MD, surgeon-in-chief and senior vice president of surgical services at Cincinnati Children’s, told Healio. “The people here are first-class and the pervasive culture here that values collaboration allows us to provide complex care that requires input from many services without barriers to working together: It is our secret sauce.”

He continued: “We have a robust research enterprise that informs and is informed by the clinical patients that we see. This bench-to-bedside and bedside-to-bench flow of information combined with the innovative culture and collaborative spirit assure that we will continue to drive advances in GI and GI surgical care.”

The 2024-2025 top-ranked hospitals for pediatric gastroenterology and GI surgery are:

  1. Cincinnati Children’s
  2. Boston Children’s Hospital
  3. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia
  4. Nationwide Children’s Hospital
  5. Texas Children’s Hospital

Cincinnati Children’s tied with Nationwide Children’s Hospital as the best children’s hospital in the Midwest region and ranked top five in the pediatric specialties of cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, and pulmonology and lung surgery.

In addition, Cincinnati Children’s was recognized in the top 50 for the inaugural ranking of pediatric and adolescent behavioral health.

“We are growing locally, regionally and globally to improve access to the care we provide; training top-notch clinicians and scientists to meet future workforce challenges; and advocating within our professional societies, communities and government for changes that make it easier for children with or without digestive disorders to thrive,” Moore said.
