For the ninth consecutive year, the Mayo Clinic has been named the best hospital in the United States for gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, according to the 2024-2025 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.
“We are proud to be recognized once again as the best division of gastroenterology and GI surgery by U.S. News & World Report,” Darrell Pardi, MD, chair of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told Healio. “It is a fitting recognition of our singular focus on best serving each and every one of our patients, whether through our integrated multispecialty practice that thrives on finding solutions for the most complicated patients or the relentless pursuit of new answers by our dedicated teams of researchers.”
In its 35th year, U.S. News & World Report compared nearly 5,000 hospitals across 15 specialties and 30 medical and surgical services. A total of 160 hospitals earned a “Best Hospitals” ranking and 20 hospitals, including Mayo Clinic Arizona and Mayo Clinic Rochester, made the Honor Roll for excellence in high-quality care.
“I think what’s different about Mayo is that it started out as the first group practice in the United States, so the culture has always been a collaborative one,” Edward V. Loftus Jr., MD, professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and chief medical editor of Healio Gastroenterology, told Healio. “The systems are organized to serve complex patients with multisystem diseases and our allied health staff are second to none.”
The 2024-2025 top-ranked hospitals for gastroenterology and GI surgery are:
- Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
- Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, Ohio
- UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
- NYU Langone Hospitals, New York
Mayo Clinic also was ranked in the top five in other subspecialties, including cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; obstetrics and gynecology; orthopedics; pulmonology and lung surgery; and rheumatology.
“We’re incredibly honored to once again lead in more specialties than any other medical center and be the only health care organization with two hospitals on the U.S. News Honor Roll,” Gianrico Farrugia, MD, Mayo Clinic’s president and CEO, said in a press release issued by the medical center. "Setting the standard for patient-centered excellence is a tremendous responsibility and one our teams take very seriously.”
