For the eighth consecutive year, Mayo Clinic is ranked the No. 1 hospital for gastroenterology and GI surgery, according to the 2023-2024 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals rankings.

“I am very proud of my coworkers, from the allied health staff to the nurse practitioners and physician assistants, to my colleagues and to divisional and institutional leadership,” Edward V. Loftus Jr., MD, professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and chief medical editor of Healio Gastroenterology, told Healio. “The Mayo Clinic model of care is something to which we all aspire: patient-centric, collegial and cooperative staff teamwork; high-quality medical care provided with compassion and trust; scholarly environment; and physician-led.”

“One of the things that differentiates Mayo Clinic is our ongoing commitment to innovation, to discover new insights into disease mechanisms, better treatments and new ways to care for patients,” Darrell Pardi, MD

In its 34th year, U.S. News & World Report compared more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions. A total of 484 hospitals earned recognition as “Best Regional Hospitals” for exceptional rankings across several areas of care, and 22 hospitals, including Mayo Clinic, made the “Honor Roll” for excellence in high-quality care.

The 2023-2024 Best Hospitals rankings and ratings implemented several new methodologies this year, including “the introduction of outpatient outcomes in key specialty rankings and surgical ratings, the expanded inclusion of other outpatient data, an increased weight on objective quality measures and a reduced weight on expert opinion.”

“One of the things that differentiates Mayo Clinic is our ongoing commitment to innovation, to discover new insights into disease mechanisms, better treatments and new ways to care for patients,” Darrell Pardi, MD, chair of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Mayo Clinic Rochester, told Healio following last year’s U.S. News & World Report. “Another differentiator is our staff’s deep commitment to delivering care with exceptionally high quality, safety and patient experience.”

The 2023-2024 top-ranked hospitals for gastroenterology and GI surgery are:

  1. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota
  2. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles
  3. UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles
  4. NYU Langone Hospitals, New York
  5. Houston Methodist Hospital

Mayo Clinic also was ranked in the top five in other subspecialties, including cancer; cardiology, heart and vascular surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; ear, nose and throat; geriatrics; neurology and neurosurgery; obstetrics and gynecology; orthopedics; pulmonology and lung surgery; rheumatology; and urology.

“We are honored that Mayo Clinic is once again the nation’s top-ranked hospital across the most specialties,” Gianrico Farrugia, MD, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, said in a press release issued by the medical center. “Our staff work tirelessly to deliver the highest level of care to every Mayo Clinic patient.”

Farrugia continued: “Today’s recognition is a testament to them and their daily commitment to providing hope and healing to those in need, and to their creativity, ingenuity and drive to create the future of healthcare.”
