RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — In a Healio video exclusive, Anjuli Luthra, MD, said women physicians with the right mindset and assistance can turn side passions into side businesses, but not all passions need to be monetized.

“Just because you do have a passion or a hobby does not mean you have to monetize it,” Luthra, a therapeutic endoscopist at UNC Rex Healthcare, said at the Scrubs and Heels Summit. “I know, especially with the power of social media, we are finally seeing all sorts of different options for women physicians to have a medical career. Sometimes, there can come, inadvertently, that pressure that we also have to start a side business. But that is not the case.”

She continued: “We are all multifaceted human beings who enjoy our passions, but if one of your passions is going to turn into a business opportunity, nothing should stop you from that.”

Luthra said that if women physicians have an idea or passion they wish to turn into a business or entrepreneurial opportunity, they need to be less averse to risk and remove any mental roadblocks preventing them from moving forward with an idea.

When forming a small business, likely a limited liability company, Luthra noted that “there can be quite a bit of paperwork and fees” included with it, and advised women to find the right attorney to help with and expedite the process.
