RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. — During the Scrubs and Heels Summit, Anita Afzali, MD, MPH, FACG, highlighted the prospects for female gastroenterologists in administrative medicine, and the skills necessary for physician executive leadership.
“Unfortunately, women are underrepresented in the board, women are underrepresented in the C-suite and therefore, representation matters,” Afzali, professor of gastroenterology and executive vice chair of medicine at the University of Cincinnati, told Healio. “We need to continue to develop ourselves, our passion, our purpose, and with that, potentially you might be also interested in transitioning into physician executive leadership or administrative medicine.”
She added: “This becomes an opportunity to make an impact, to build, to grow an organization, to be involved in the operations. Your unique standpoint with the clinical background and expertise that you have allows you to be not only a patient advocate but also an advocate for health care within an organization.”
