VIDEO: Bowel urgency ‘dominates burden, fear of incontinence’ in UC
In a Healio video exclusive, Simon Travis, DPhil, FRCP, consultant gastroenterologist the University of Oxford, highlighted the unmet need to treat bowel urgency among patients with ulcerative colitis.
In online, quantitative, cross-sectional surveys of patients with moderate to severe UC conducted in the United States and Europe, bowel urgency was the second-most frequently reported symptom and one of the primary reasons cited for declining to participate in social events, work/school and sports/physical exercise.
“Bowel urgency is a symptom of unmet need; it’s a symptom that patients’ fear and it dominates the burden and the fear of incontinence. Here we have the opportunity of treating that condition,” Travis said. “There is treatment around the corner which may help this miserable symptom that reduces the quality of life of all of our patients with ulcerative colitis.”
