In an online webinar, Rainbows in Gastro, in association with the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, will promote awareness and education on LGBTQ+ issues that impact career choices and patient care.

“We know from data from the American Medical Association that approximately 4% of medical students identify as LGBTQ+. There are likely even fewer LGBTQ+ trainees who choose to specialize in gastroenterology,” Nikki Duong, MD, Rainbows in Gastro executive council member and gastroenterology fellow at Virginia Commonwealth University, told Healio. “In addition, nearly one-third of surveyed medical students conceal their sexual identity during training for multiple reasons including fear of it impacting evaluations and jeopardizing one's career.

“In order to alleviate these concerns and stressors, we created this webinar to provide trainees with our insight into the interview process. The panelists are current gastroenterology fellows and one current practicing, early-career gastroenterologist,” Duong continued. “We hope that by providing our candid anecdotes, we can inspire the next generation of trainees to be their best and truest selves and to be welcomed into our specialty.”

The webinar will occur on Wednesday, Sept. 21, at 5 p.m. Registration is open to fellows, residents and students. For more information and to sign up for the webinar, visit https://asge.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_j23nGM-MSa6oc0vJIaJ4AA.
