Mayo Clinic again tops charts as best hospital for gastroenterology, GI surgery

Mayo Clinic has been ranked the number one hospital in the nation both overall and for gastroenterology and GI surgery for the seventh consecutive year by the U.S. News & World Report for the 2022 to 2023 year.
“One of the things that differentiates Mayo Clinic is our ongoing commitment to innovation, to discover new insights into disease mechanisms, better treatments and new ways to care for patients,” Darrell Pardi, MD, chair of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, told Healio. “Another differentiator is our staff’s deep commitment to delivering care with exceptionally high quality, safety and patient experience.”
Historically, Mayo Clinic Rochester has ranked first since the U.S. News & World Report first published state rankings in 2012. Mayo Clinic in both Arizona and Florida also topped state ranking lists. Data for the report was derived using CMS, the American Hospital Association, professional organizations and medical specialists as well as objective patient care measures.
“We’re proud to again be recognized as the number one hospital in the nation,” Gianrico Farrugia, MD, president and CEO of Mayo Clinic, said in a press release. “This honor underscores the incredible commitment of our staff to deliver the highest standard of care to our patients each and every day. Our staff are truly at the heart of this achievement.”
Mayo Clinic was also featured as a top performer on the report’s “honor roll” list.
“We are committed to ongoing innovation in all three shields (patient care, education and research), including increasing application of digital tools such as artificial intelligence, clinical trials, endoscopic innovation and practice redesign to transform the future of healthcare in GI,” Pardi added.

“I think it’s a testament to the overall excellence and caring of the physicians, researchers, advanced providers and allied health staff at Mayo,” Edward V. Loftus Jr., MD, professor of medicine at Mayo Clinic Rochester and chief medical officer of Healio Gastroenterology, said. “It may have more to do with the way Mayo is organized and the culture handed down over the generations than anything else. This quote by William Mayo, MD, in 1910, sums it up: ‘the best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered, and in order that the sick may have the benefit of advancing knowledge, union of forces is necessary’.”
