May 19 is Hepatitis Testing Day, and in this Healio video exclusive, Nancy S. Reau, MD, FAASLD, AGAF, stresses the importance of screening and vaccination to reach global hepatitis elimination.

“The only way to identify [hepatitis C transmission] early is through screening — most of our patients do not develop symptoms until the disease is significant,” Reau, the Richard B. Capps Chair of Hepatology and professor of digestive diseases and nutrition at Rush University in Chicago, said. “Even if you do not have risk factors, get screened for hepatitis C and hepatitis B; get vaccinated against hepatitis B, it is a vaccine preventable disease; and if you do screen positive, make sure you encourage your close contacts to undergo screening and link to someone for care.”
