In this video exclusive, Aasma Shaukat, MD, MPH, professor at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, discusses how her group achieved diverse enrollment for PREEMPT CRC, a study designed to validate a blood test for colorectal cancer screening.

“In this trial, we were able to enroll a much higher proportion of both Blacks and Hispanics than traditionally in clinical trials and also much higher than representation in the U.S. population,” Shaukat, who also is co-lead and co-principal investigator for the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer Through Multiomics Blood Testing (PREEMPT CRC) trial, said. “We were surprised by how high the enthusiasm in the enrollment was.”

According to Shaukat, the trial offered both in-person and virtual enrollment during the COVID-19 pandemic, which boosted enrollment and also helped diversify the study population.

“I think going forward it’s very important to have virtual platforms and use them to our advantage to enroll diverse populations in clinical trials,” Shaukat said.
