NAPLES, Florida — Asad Ur Rahman, MD, a gastroenterologist at Cleveland Clinic Florida, spoke with Healio about highlights from three presentations he attended at the 2022 ACG/FGS Spring Symposium.
In a “whirlwind tour” on managing patients with mild-to-moderate IBD, recommendations included trying 5-ASA agents in those with ulcerative colitis and short-term budesonide in patients with Crohn’s disease, rather than jumping into biological therapy from the get-go.
The presentation also included information on alternative therapy options for IBD patients, despite the lack of data on its use.
A session on the importance of being an internal medicine physician for patients with IBD and considering all their health care needs also stood out to Rahman. “Just looking at them as a whole, instead of just focusing on their IBD,” he said.
Another presentation focused on the use of precision medicine, which, according to Rahman, is in a “very rudimentary stage” in IBD. Takeaways included unmet needs in those with IBD, risk-stratifying patients from the onset and targeting therapies accordingly, not just aiming for clinical remission.
