NAPLES, Florida — In this video, Jennifer L. Seminerio, MD, speaks with Healio about some of the most informative presentations at the 2022 ACG/FGS Spring Symposium.

Seminerio, assistant professor and director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the University of South Florida, highlighted a session on hospitalizations in patients with IBD, noting that physicians must get early involvement with colorectal surgeons.

“This needs to be a team approach,” she said. “This needs to be something that we recognize as a joint effort, and we’re not saying to patients that they are giving up, or that they’re a failure if they do this.”

Seminerio also discussed a session about malignancy in IBD, stating, “I think that the biggest take home is that with anti-TNFs, there may be some increase of melanomatous skin cancers, and with the thiopurine analogs, there is some increase in non-melanomatous skin cancers.”

Lastly, a presentation focused on precision medicine in IBD, and stressed that clinicians should consider both activity and severity when approaching treatment options. “You have to somewhat think of the two separately and then combine them together to give the best approach to precision medicine,” she said.
