Medtronic appointed Austin L. Chiang, MD, MPH, of Sidney Kimmel Medical College and chief medical social media officer and director of the endoscopic bariatric program at Thomas Jefferson University, chief medical officer of gastrointestinal business.

“As health care continues to evolve at such a rapid pace, we are excited to add a clinician of Dr. Chiang’s caliber to our leadership team,” Giovanni Di Napoli, president of GI business for Medtronic, said in a press release. “Dr. Chiang’s approach to medicine and educating health care providers and patients is on the leading edge of health care innovation. His forward thinking and desire to personalize medicine for patients and providers will help Medtronic to continue evolving and serving the ever-changing health care community.”

As a nationally recognized gastroenterologist and triple board-certified advanced endoscopy-trained physician, Chiang will provide medical expertise and guidance on evidence development, clinical communications and publications as well as training and support needs. He will additionally ensure patient safety throughout the product development process; this includes risk management, clinical trials and safety surveillance, according to the release.

“My interest in reaching a broader audience through social media was a prelude to what I hope to achieve now, a more tangible impact on health outcomes at the population level,” Chiang told Healio Gastroenterology. “I believe my innovative spirit aligns with the direction of Medtronic GI, who were first to market with their artificial intelligence-assisted polyp detection device, GI Genius, earlier this year.”
