LAS VEGAS – In this video exclusive, Miguel Regueiro, MD, discussed a study assessing the risk of severe disease in postoperative patients with Crohn’s disease with isolated anastomotic disease.
Regueiro, chair of Cleveland Clinic’s Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute and department of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, said the rate of relevance and importance of the rate of postoperative Crohn’s disease recurrence was very high.
“Any recurrence, even the mild recurrence that we would consider remission, did have an increased rate of postoperative recurrence long-term,” he said.
Regueiro said if there is an inflammation noted, there is a likelihood that the patient’s disease will recur in the future.
“[It is] still not clear if we need to start treatment right away for those lesions but it is somebody that we should follow more closely over time because of the rates of recurrence,” he concluded.
