In this exclusive video, Freddy Caldera, DO, MS, from the division of gastroenterology and hepatology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, discusses his paper on reducing the risk for vaccine preventable disease during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The paper was published in Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Caldera said the pandemic has reduced the number of interactions between patients and providers, limiting the chances for immunization. Once patients begin returning more regularly for health care visits, specialists, including gastroenterologists, will have to assume some of that burden.

“We all have to take some responsibility for vaccination,” he said. “This can’t just fall on primary care doctors.”
