LOS ANGELES — In this exclusive video from GI Outlook 2019, Edward Sun, MD, from Stonybrook University Medical Center, discusses his presentation about leading a strong gastroenterology team.

“Most of the literature out there focuses on the individual team leader, on their characteristics being critical to the success or the failure of a team,” Sun told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “But there’s so many lessons we can learn from business.”

Sun’s presentation focused on the work of Harvard business professor J.R. Hackman, a leader in work design. By applying his techniques to the GI world, Sun said a leader can build a strong team that truly works together.

Focusing on things such as ensuring a team has a compelling direction, an enabling and supportive structure and expert coaching can improve patient satisfaction while fostering better morale within the team.
