The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has named John Vargo II, MD, MPH, FASGE, of Cleveland Clinic, as its new president, according to a press release.

Vargo officially took over as president of the society at Digestive Disease Week last month in San Diego and his term will last one year. Since joining the ASGE in 1991, Vargo has held a number of roles, including governing board councilor, secretary and trustee of the ASGE Foundation. He is also a member of the ASGE executive committee.

In addition to working in clinical practice, Vargo is the director of enterprise endoscopy operations at the Digestive Disease & Surgery Institute and the director of endoscopic research and innovation at Cleveland Clinic.

As president, he wants to focus on providing services to new, younger members of the society, according to the release. Vargo has already established a virtual advisory committee comprised entirely of GI fellows who will provide insight into new educational programs and curricula. He also wants to use social media to engage with society members and the GI community at large.

Vargo will also preside over the second ASGE summit on infection control, as well as continue ASGE GOLD (GI Organizational Leadership Development), a program that helps ASGE members with 5 to 10 years of experience develop leadership skills and further their career.
