The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has named Steven A. Edmundowicz, MD, FASGE, of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, as its new president, according to a press release.

Edmundowicz officially began his tenure as president in June at Digestive Disease Week in Washington, D.C., and will hold the role until May 2019. He has been a member of the society since 1989 and has also performed the roles of governing board councilor and treasurer.

He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed his residency training at Washington University School of Medicine. Over his career, Edmundowicz has held leadership positions at Washington University School of Medicine, Jefferson Medical College, Alleghany University of the Health Sciences and the University of Colorado.

According to the press release, Edmundowicz has been focused on studying and applying new technologies in the field of endoscopy, particularly for the management of GERD and morbid obesity.

In his position as president, Edmundowicz is set to launch a new leadership program designed to help members 5 to 10 years following fellowship. The ASGE GOLD (GI Organizational Leadership Development) program will focus on helping members gain the skills they need to become leaders in endoscopic practice in various settings.

Disclosures: Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease was unable to confirm Edmundowicz’s relevant financial disclosures at the time of publication.
