VIDEO: CMS Quality Payment Program continues to challenge physicians

AUSTIN, Texas — In this exclusive video perspective from GI Outlook 2018, Walter G. Park, MD, MS, assistant professor at Stanford University in California and chair of the Health and Public Policy Committee for ASGE, discusses the Medicare Merit-Based Incentive Payment System.
“These value-based programs, while they may have some limitations and obviously have challenges, they are here to stay,” Park told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease. “Part of our discussion is how to keep you aware of how to successfully navigate these programs so that your practice can succeed going forward.”
Park noted that, for 2018, the performance and reporting component of the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) is at the halfway point. Additionally, CMS has recently issued proposed rules for the 2019 reporting year.
Park highlighted the categories required to successfully participate in MIPS, which include quality, cost, promoting interoperability, and improvement activities. Promoting interoperability, he said, is the “new name for advancing care information” or using electronic health records meaningfully.
“I would encourage you to refer to the ASGE website on MACRA as well as the CMS website,” Park said.
