Perrigo has launched a new, orally disintegrating omeprazole tablet for the treatment of frequent heartburn.

The company will sell the drug over-the-counter and market it as a store brand to provide individuals with an option to treat heartburn, per a press release.

“Consumers want heartburn medication that provides effective, long-term relief, but they also want a product that is easy and convenient to take,” Jeff Needham, Perrigo executive vice president and president of the company’s Consumer Healthcare America segment, said in the press release.

Perrigo developed the product — known as Omeprazole ODT — in a partnership with Israeli pharmaceutical company Dexcel Technologies, which contributed with its MelTech technology, that allows the tablet to dissolve in the mouth without water.

The company said the tablets will be available in May 2018.

“Our novel Omeprazole ODT product combines the effective heartburn relief of omeprazole with innovative MelTech melt-in-your-mouth technology that heartburn sufferers desire,” Needham said in the press release. “Perrigo is excited to be the first to bring this innovation to the heartburn OTC category while still delivering quality, affordable store-brand products to consumers.”
