ORLANDO — As endoscopists aim to ever improve their adenoma detection rates through honing technique, new technologies offer the promise of detecting even more and further preventing colon cancer. One meta-analysis presented at the World Congress of Gastroenterology at ACG 2017 aimed to determine if they work.
“There’s a tremendous drive in terms of technology to further improve adenoma detection rate and aid us in this area,” Seth A. Gross, MD, FACG, of NYU Langone Health, told Healio Gastroenterology and Liver Disease.
Gross and colleagues looked at more than 240 papers in the literature, focusing on 45 of these, to determine if mechanical and optical enhancements to colonoscopy technology provided an advantage for the endoscopist and the ADR.
“Our preliminary data ... suggests that there’s an added benefit with a mechanical enhancement vs. an optical enhancement. In addition, what we found was that both types are safe to the patient, which is critically important,” he said.
