ACG elects Irving M. Pike 2017-18 president

ORLANDO – American College of Gastroenterology 2017-2018 president Irving M. Pike, MD, FACG, officially assumed his position during the World Congress of Gastroenterology at ACG 2017, according to a press release.
As ACG President, Pike will direct programs that continue medical education in the scientific and patient-related skills of gastroenterology, national and state medical affair activities, health policy issues and clinical investigation, according to the release.
Pike is the founding director and former president of the GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC), a joint venture of the ACG and the ASGE that aims to improve the quality of gastroenterology patient care, according to the release. He has also served as a member of the ACG Board of Trustees since 2007 and as an officer since 2013, per the press release.
Currently senior vice president and chief medical officer at John Muir Health and President of the John Muir Specialty Medical Group, Pike has years of experience in gastroenterology, said the press release. Pike has practiced gastroenterology since 1983, and spent 12 years as a physician executive with Sentara Healthcare where he was responsible for patient safety, care management and delivery, and medical staff leadership education, per the release. After earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, Pike was an assistant professor of clinical internal medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School for 26 years.
“The ACG will continue to evolve to support gastroenterologists’ need for help navigating an increasingly complex regulatory environment as well as pressures from the government and private insurers,” Pike said. “The College will continue to be proactive in these regards and educate legislators and CMS on the impact of potential decisions on our members and our patients. My goal will be for the ACG to continue to lead in this effort, rather than follow.”
