LAS VEGAS — In this exclusive video from ACG 2016, Tram T. Tran, MD, FACG, medical director of liver transplantation, Liver Disease and Transplant Center, Cedars-Sinai, Los Angeles, discusses the role of gastroenterologists in future hepatitis C virus treatment, and how they will play a role in assisting primary care physicians in treatment.

The general gastroenterologists will first and foremost treat as many patients as possible, according to Tran, but they should also take a more active role in teaching primary care physicians about treatment and raising awareness for screening.

“The gastroenterologist may be a resource for those who want to learn to treat in the primary care field. Both the general gastroenterologist and primary care physician can work together to screen and treat as many patients as possible,” Tran said.

Disclosure: Tran reports financial relationships with AbbVie, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Gilead Sciences and Merck.
