LAS VEGAS — In this exclusive video from ACG 2016, John R. Saltzman, MD, FACG, director of endoscopy at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Chair of Educational Affairs for ACG, discusses several presentations delivered at the presidential plenary session.

These included a study on G-POEM, a gastric submucosal dissection technique to incise the pyloric muscle in patients with gastroparesis, which was successful in a small group of patients with refractory gastroparesis, and there was also a good clinical response in most patients.

“It was really a very interesting study showing the potential value of an endoscopic procedure ... to treat a very difficult-to-treat patient population,” he said.

Another study Saltzman highlighted confirms current practice recommendations that patients should undergo cholecystectomy during their initial hospitalization for gallstone pancreatitis. “What they showed [was] the patients who underwent cholecystectomy ... had a much lower incidence of recurrent pancreatitis,” he said.

Finally, he reviewed a Danish population-based study comparing the effectiveness and adverse events of Remicade (infliximab, Janssen) and Humira (adalimumab, AbbVie) therapies in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

“What they saw was that infliximab compared to adalimumab in the ulcerative colitis group had fewer all-cause hospitalizations ... but there was no difference in the Crohn’s population.”
