While colonoscopy maintains its position as the foremost screening strategy for colorectal cancer, even top experts know there is room for improvement, both in technique and technology.

Healio Gastroenterology discussed how endoscopists can push their skills further and what technology is adding to this betterment of the field. First and foremost, experts agreed, is knowing one’s own adenoma detection rate and understanding how that compares to one’s peers.

“For the physician who’s already in practice who wants to improve their technique, there are many resources available,” Michael B. Wallace, MD, told Healio Gastroenterology. “First and foremost, they should start measuring ... and if they find that their numbers are low, there are many courses available through the ASGE, many lecture sessions and many online resources they can use to improve their detection. But, simply being aware of it is the most important factor.”

In this issue, you can also see how treatments affect long-term outcomes of colorectal cancer, learn about new options for bowel prep and also hear from experts about how to best prepare the colon prior to colonoscopy.

Don’t forget to update yourself on the FDA’s recommended approval for a biosimilar in gastroenterology and hear from an expert on the latest in treating recurrent Clostridium difficile.

Additionally, this issue contains the inaugural list of the Healio Gastroenterology 200, a list of gastroenterology and hepatology professionals we identified as leading innovators across the specialties. We compiled this list and hope it sparks conversation among these leaders and up-and-coming trailblazers and you, our readers and their peers. Review our list and let us know where we should go in the future.
