88 Health Products has launched xylose isomerase, branded FructosAid, the first enzyme supplement in the U.S. to treat fructose malabsorption, according to a press release.

Fructose malabsorption — not to be confused with hereditary fructose intolerance — is an under-recognized digestive complication affecting up to a third of the general population, according to the press release. It can cause abdominal pain, bloating, gas and diarrhea.

Fructose absorption is limited by the availability and activity of enzymes and transporters sufficient to break down and absorb fructose,” according to the press release. The supplement works by converting dietary fructose in the gut into glucose that can be readily absorbed and used by the body.

Xylose isomerase is marketed in Europe as Xylosolv. In the U.S., FructosAid is marketed by 88 Health Products under exclusive license from the patent-owner Sciotec Pharma GmbH of Austria, a division of STADA Arzneimittel.

Janice Joneja , PhD, RD, a food allergy and intolerance expert, has endorsed the supplement, calling it “a true blessing for those struggling with the discomfort of fructose malabsorption,” according to the press release.
