VIDEO: Outgoing AGA president recaps presidential address at DDW

SAN DIEGO — In this exclusive video from DDW 2016, outgoing AGA President Michael Camilleri, MD, from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., discusses the major points he made during the AGA Presidential Address, focusing on a number of different AGA initiatives that bring value to its members and the field of gastroenterology.

“In the past year, the AGA has been very much involved in trying to enhance the position of our specialty with regard to how we should have maintenance of certification,” he said. “We’ve had a great deal of conversations with the American Board of Internal Medicine and we have helped to develop a coalition of gastroenterology societies as well as internal medicine organizations, in order to emphasize the importance of doing away with the closed-book, high-stakes exam every 10 years, as well as individualized maintenance of certification depending upon a doctor’s subspecialty interest and expertise in their clinical practice.”

Other new initiatives include the development of clinical practice updates to complement AGA guidelines, which aim to “guide organizations and payers to make sure appropriate reimbursement is provided for high value care,” as well as $2.4 million in research grants provided by the AGA, he said.
