VIDEO: Bile salts predict recurrent C. difficile infection

SAN DIEGO — In this exclusive video from DDW 2016, Jessica R. Allegretti, MD, MPH, from the Crohn’s and Colitis Center and Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women's Hospital, discusses her presentation on the potential of the secondary bile acid plasma deoxycholate as a promising biomarker for recurrence of Clostridium difficile infection.

“We found that bile salts were the most effective predictors of disease status; specifically, secondary bile acids in the stool performed most effectively,” she said. “What we’re ultimately hoping to use this data for in the future is potentially identifying a novel biomarker of recurrent disease and also possibly a novel therapeutic.”
