SAN DIEGO — Beginning Saturday, May 21, Healio Gastroenterology will provide live coverage from Digestive Disease Week 2016 at the San Diego Convention Center.

Sponsored by the AGA, ASGE, AASLD and the SSAT, the conference will be held from May 21 to 24, and will convene “the world’s largest” meeting of physicians and researchers in gastroenterology, hepatology, endoscopy and gastrointestinal surgery. More than 5,000 abstracts and hundreds of lectures on the most recent advances in research, medicine and technology will be presented.

This year’s meeting will highlight “the latest research on hot topics such as the microbiome and its potential to treat digestive disorders, racial disparities in health care, innovations to improve colorectal cancer screenings, and the latest developments in the treatment of obesity,” Grace Elta, MD, chair of the Digestive Disease Week council, said during a press conference.

Other notable research will be presented at the AGA Presidential Plenary, moderated by AGA Institute President Michael Camilleri, MD, AGAF, which will include new data on post-colonoscopy colorectal cancer rates, pancreatic cancer detection, an investigational opioid-induced constipation therapy, and a monoclonal antibody for preventing recurrent C. difficile infection, among others.

In addition, William D. Chey, MD, professor of medicine and nutrition sciences at the University of Michigan health system, director of the Digestive Diseases Center for Nutrition and Behavior at the University of Michigan, and Healio Gastroenterology Peer Perspective Board Member, will present the first U.S. randomized controlled trial evaluating the low FODMAPs diet in patients with IBS.

Also of note, William Sandborn, MD, chief of the division of gastroenterology, and professor of medicine at University of California, San Diego, will present phase 3 trial data of Stelara (ustekinumab, Janssen) in moderate-to-severe Crohn’s disease.
