AGA announces $2.25 million endowment for neuroenteric disease research

The American Gastroenterological Association Research Foundation has announced receipt of a philanthropic donation that will fund an award to advance research in neuroenteric disease, according to a press release.

The AGA-Athena Troxel Blackburn Research Scholar Award in Neuroenteric Disease will provide $270,000 over 3 years, which AGA will match, resulting in a $2.25 million award, the release said. The grant will fund a young researcher working in the field of neuroenteric disease, which includes diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and other that affect “the brain-gut axis, or the relationship between the enteric nervous system and central nervous system,” according to the release

“On behalf of the AGA Research Foundation, I would like to thank Mrs. Blackburn for this significant donation,” Martin Brotman, MD, AGAF, and chair of the AGA Research Foundation, said in the release. “This grant will not only benefit young researchers, but also the field of gastroenterology by furthering our understanding of neuroenteric disease.”

Applications are open to junior faculty. The deadline to apply in June 5, 2015, and the recipient will be selected by the AGA Research Awards panel, after which funding will begin in October, according to the release.
