According to results from a US product evaluation comparing ostomy pouching systems conducted last year, clinicians and users preferred a new device that offered a better fit, discretion and overall patient experience, the manufacturer announced this week.

According to a press release, the survey involved 497 clinicians and 213 people living with an ostomy, who were asked to compare the SenSura Mio (Coloplast) with their current devices from Coloplast, ConvaTec and Hollister. Results from surveyed clinicians showed that 90% reported the device’s elastic barrier fits body shapes and follows patients’ body movements better than their current device; 81% reported improved overall patient experience; and 96% said they would recommend it for hospital use. Results from surveyed ostomy patients showed that 90% reported the device’s pouch offered good or very good discretion, 89% reported the elastic barrier had good or very good fit and 86% reported the elastic barrier was good or very good at following body movements.

“Insecurity and lack of discretion are two important and well-documented obstacles for people with an ostomy,” Anders Holm, vice president of Coloplast Ostomy Care, said in the release. “Our innovation and design teams worked hard to come up with an answer to those challenges. We are proud to be able to listen and respond with a product designed with individual bodies in mind to make a positive change for those living with an ostomy.”

The SenSura Mio launched in May 2014 and is available throughout the US, the release said. It has a new elastic barrier “designed to fit individual bodies and follow its contours and movements throughout the day to maintain a secure seal. It is also the first ostomy pouch to be produced in a soft all-textile material…to give it a personal discreet look and feel,” and it has a full-circle filter designed to protect against ballooning, which 78% of users said was better than their current product in a recent survey, the release said.
