ASGE names 2013-2014 governing board, president

The American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has announced the members of its 2013-2014 governing board, according to a press release.

Kenneth K. Wang, MD, professor of medicine at Mayo Medical School, co-director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Program at Mayo Comprehensive Cancer Center and director of the Advanced Endoscopy Group and Barrett’s Esophagus Unit at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., has been named ASGE president. The board, which began its service on May 18 and will conclude its term after May 2014, includes:

  • President-elect: Colleen M. Schmitt, MD, MHS, Galen Medical Group; Chattanooga, Tenn.
  • Secretary: Kenneth R. McQuaid, MD, VA Medical Center; San Francisco
  • Treasurer: Douglas O. Faigel, MD, Mayo Clinic; Scottsdale, Ariz.
  • Treasurer-elect: Steven A. Edmundowicz, MD, Washington University School of Medicine; St. Louis
  • Past president: Thomas M. Deas Jr., MD, Gastroenterology Associates of North Texas; Fort Worth, Texas
  • Past president: Gregory G. Ginsberg, MD, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; Philadelphia
  • Councilor: Amitabh Chak, MD, University Hospitals Case Medical Center; Cleveland
  • Councilor: Ian M. Gralnek, MD, Bruce and Ruth Rappaport Faculty of Medicine, Technion-Israel Institute of Technology; Haifa, Israel
  • Councilor: Klaus Mergener, MD,PhD, Digestive Health Specialists; Tacoma, Wash.

“These are exciting times for the society and for the GI profession,” Wang said in the release. “It is a great honor to lead ASGE as president, and in the coming year, my priorities include increasing collaboration with international GI societies. There are many areas of the world where physicians are in need of the kind of expert endoscopic training that ASGE members from the U.S. can provide, while at the same time, there is much that we can learn from our international colleagues, particularly those in Asia, in terms of new techniques. I look forward to forging new bonds between endoscopists across the globe.”
