Distinct and overlapping microbial clusters were observed in the fecal microbiota of patients with irritable bowel syndrome, according to a study.

However, pyrosequencing among a cohort of 37 well-characterized IBS patients did not reveal uniform microbiota changes.

Normal-like microbiota were observed in one subgroup of 15 IBS patients compared to healthy controls. Researchers observed large microbiota-wide changes in the other 22 samples, including an increase in Firmicutes: Bacteroidetes ratio.

“This is the first study to define patient subgroups whose microbiota had markedly different characteristics and to associate microbial signatures to clinical variables within these subgroups,” the study authors wrote.
