Recent studies show endocrine-disrupting chemicals difficult to avoid
Despite new criteria for defining and regulating use of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, or EDCs, taking effect in Europe, scientists, citizens and policymakers worldwide continue to debate the effects of chemicals commonly found in consumer goods. In a recent statement, the Endocrine Society raised concern that the bar for defining a chemical as endocrine disruptor is too high. Meanwhile, suspect chemicals have been found in restaurant and fast food offerings and containers, essential oils and cash register receipts, among many others.
Thyroid function in early pregnancy may predict gestational diabetes risk
Among pregnant women, a thyroid hormone marker indicating the conversion rate from thyroxine to triiodothyronine measured during the first and second trimesters may serve as an independent predictor of gestational diabetes risk, according to findings from a case-control study published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.

Incidence of childhood hyperthyroidism in France, although rare, may be on the rise, peaking during adolescence and affecting girls more than boys, according to findings published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
Thyroid cancer doubles risk for heart disease in men vs. women
Male thyroid cancer survivors are twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease in the 5 years after diagnosis vs. women, according to findings from a U.S. population-based study.
Novel genomic sequence classifier improves detection of benign thyroid nodules
A new genomic sequencing classifier accurately classified more thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytology as benign vs. its predecessor, the gene expression classifier, potentially eliminating unnecessary surgery for some patients, according to findings from a masked validation study published in JAMA Surgery.
Change in post-thyroidectomy PTH, calcium levels linked to permanent hypoparathyroidism
BOSTON — Postoperative change in serum levels of calcium and parathyroid hormone from before surgery might help predict which patients are at risk for developing permanent hypoparathyroidism following total thyroidectomy, according to study findings presented at the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists annual meeting.
Pleural effusion linked to poor survival in thyroid cancer
BOSTON — Among patients with well-differentiated metastatic thyroid carcinoma, mortality risk factors include older age, incomplete tumor resection, certain metastasis locations and, notably, pleural effusion among those with lung metastases, according to data presented here.
International authority on thyroid disorders receives teaching award

Low maternal thyroxine levels associated with lower nonverbal child IQ
Children born to mothers with a low level of free thyroxine during pregnancy are more likely to have a lower nonverbal IQ score at age 5 to 8 years vs. children born to mothers with a normal level of the thyroid hormone, according to an analysis of three mother-child birth cohorts.
Active surveillance trends in low-risk thyroid cancer vary by endocrinologist, surgeon
The frequency of active surveillance to monitor low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma has increased as evidence points to its safety and superiority over immediate surgery, but researchers observed high variation of its use between endocrinologists and surgeons, according to an analysis of long-term data from a Japanese hospital.
