Researcher highlights new treatments for thyroid eye disease
CHICAGO — Thyroid eye disease, a condition most commonly associated with Graves’ hypothyroidism, typically comes with a range of symptoms that can make everyday tasks challenging and quickly reduce quality of life. Within 18 months of a diagnosis of Graves’ disease, approximately 80% of patients will develop thyroid eye disease, with symptoms including proptosis, the main cause or morbidity, as well as eyelid retraction, strabismus and compressive optic neuropathy.

CHICAGO — The American Thyroid Association’s annual Van Meter Award, presented to an investigator younger than 45 years who has made outstanding contributions to thyroid research, was conferred on a cancer epidemiologist for her work elucidating the contributions of environment and lifestyle, particularly obesity, to the rising incidence of thyroid cancer. The 2019 recipient, kept secret until the award lecture at the annual meeting, is Cari Kitahara, PhD, an investigator in the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, Radiation Epidemiology Branch, of NIH’s National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Levothyroxine fails to benefit elderly patients with subclinical hypothyroidism
Older adults with subclinical hypothyroidism treated with levothyroxine did not experience an improvement in symptoms or quality of life measures compared with similar adults assigned placebo, , according to findings published in JAMA.
