COVID-19 not linked to increased long-term risk for CVD or diabetes

Is BMI the best metric for assessing obesity and cardiometabolic risks?
Obesity is a dysregulation of the energy balance pathways in the human body. People with obesity are defending an abnormal body weight set point, and we can recognize and start to address that with the easiest tool we have, BMI. You just need height and weight, and you can calculate it. However, in certain populations, the standard cutoff values do not accurately correspond to risks. Someone who is Asian and has a BMI of 23 kg/m2 or 24 kg/m2, may have a “normal” BMI, but in reality, patients of Asian descent have a higher risk at a lower BMI. It’s the same thing for African Americans at higher BMI cutoff values.
Genetics and racism contribute to racial-ethnic disparities in obesity and comorbidities
Obesity prevalence is on the rise across the U.S., but some groups are at a greater risk for the disease than others.
Remnant cholesterol may be an independent risk factor for ASCVD progression
The level of total cholesterol minus HDL and LDL was associated with progression of atherosclerosis, independently of traditional CV risk factors, according to data published in Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging.
Daily avocado consumption does not impact visceral adiposity
Consumption of one avocado daily was not found to reduce visceral adiposity and only had a slight effect on cardiometabolic disorder risk factors, researchers reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association.
Disparities reported in use of cardioprotective drugs in type 2 diabetes
Among adults with type 2 diabetes, white men and white women and those seeing an endocrinologist receive more prescriptions for SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists than Black adults and those seen only in primary care, data show.
Higher visceral adiposity index score linked to increased risk for all-cause mortality
Adults with a higher visceral adiposity index score have an increased risk for all-cause mortality as well as some cause-specific mortalities, according to data from the UK Biobank.
