Elevated hair cortisol levels increased CVD, diabetes risk in elderly
Long-term elevated cortisol levels — as measured by scalp hair — were associated with a history of cardiovascular disease among elderly participants in the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam. According to researchers, there was no relationship between long-term cortisol levels and chronic non-cardiovascular diseases.
VTE risk elevated among glucocorticoid users
Glucocorticoid users exhibited an increased risk for venous thromboembolism, particularly pulmonary embolism, according to results of a population-based case-control study conducted in Denmark.

Early diagnosis of pediatric Cushing’s disease improved surgical outcomes
Early postoperative endocrine testing could predict lasting remission among pediatric patients with Cushing’s disease, according to recent study findings published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism. Other findings suggest early diagnosis has the potential to improve surgical outcomes due to an association with younger age, smaller adenomas and lack of dural invasion.
Reduced cortisol metabolism contributed to abnormal blood hormone levels
Within the literature, reductions in cortisol are attributed to stress-induced activation of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and increased corticotropin-driven cortisol production. However, critically ill patients in the ICU with reduced cortisol breakdown tended to have abnormal blood cortisol levels, which researchers said could play a role in the diagnosis of adrenal failure and treatment options within this setting.
Neonatal screenings boost diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia
It has been established that congenital adrenal hyperplasia is due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency resulting in cortisol and aldosterone deficiency. Recent study results from Swedish researchers suggest that male and female infants with the severe form of the disorder are often clinically missed, and neonatal screening equally improved survival rates among both sexes.
Steroids increased risk for CVD, mortality in patients with Cushing’s disease
It has been established in the literature that Cushing’s disease is associated with an increased risk for mortality. In a recent study, researchers suggest that even after successful treatment, patients exposed to excessive amounts of cortisol have a greater risk for dying or developing cardiovascular disease.
Impaired health status of CAH acquired, not determined
Recent literature has emphasized the long-term health problems of adults with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. In a recent study, researchers in the United Kingdom reported that improved medical attention of the disease-causing mutation could lead to modified treatments.
FDA warns of liver injury risk associated with hyponatremia drug
The FDA today issued a warning regarding the potential for hyponatremia treatment Samsca to cause liver injury.
Sodium rhythms explored via space flight simulation
In a study examining the salt intake and balance of Russian cosmonauts, researchers discovered rhythmic sodium excretory and retention patterns independent of blood pressure or water. The findings were published in the journal Cell Metabolism.
