SAN ANTONIO — In this Healio video exclusive, Katherine H. Saunders, MD, DABOM, discusses important considerations for appropriate prescription of weight-loss medications.

Saunders, who is co-founder of FlyteHealth (a clinical services affiliate of Intellihealth) and an obesity medicine physician at Weill Cornell Medicine, discussed the importance of conducting a thorough evaluation of patients’ barriers to weight loss; understanding why a patient is presenting for obesity treatment in the first place; and creating a personalized treatment plan to optimize weight loss.

“Obesity is a really complex, heterogeneous and often refractory or difficult-to-treat disease,” Saunders told Healio. “A one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to obesity is just not possible. To really treat obesity well, it’s critical for a provider to do an extremely thorough evaluation of every single patient, and the purpose of that evaluation is to understand every single factor that is contributing to weight gain and every barrier preventing weight loss, so that, as part of our treatment plan, we can address all of those factors.”

She also said GLP-1 receptor agonists “are not the only tool in our armamentarium” and should not be considered as such.
