DALLAS — In this Healio video exclusive, Marshall Chin, MD, MPH, discussed the importance of measuring sex, gender identity and sexual orientation for advancing health equity.

“We need to understand the lived experience to do the best job to care for patients,” Chin, the Richard Parrillo Family Distinguished Service Professor of Healthcare Ethics at the University of Chicago, told Healio. “Too often, for our LGBTQ patients, we don’t, either as a profession or a research enterprise, fully capture and understand the lived experience.”

During a keynote lecture at ObesityWeek, Chin explained the differences between the terms sex, gender identity and sexual orientation and discussed how to measure them. Chin also provided resources with recommended questions clinicians can use in their practice.
