BALTIMORE — In this video exclusive, Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDN, CDCES, FADCES, talks with Sherita Hill Golden, MD, MHS, about historical drivers of health inequities in diabetes and obesity and specific actions providers can take today.

Weiner is owner and clinical director of Susan Weiner Nutrition, PLLC, in North Bellmore, NY, an Endocrine Today Editorial Board member and the Diabetes in Real Life column editor. Golden is the Hugh P. McCormick Family Professor of Endocrinology and Metabolism and vice president and chief diversity officer of the office of diversity, inclusion and health equity at Johns Hopkins Medicine.

To begin to address disparities in diabetes and other conditions, the health care system must earn the trust of minoritized patient groups, Golden said. She describes lessons from COVID-19 testing that can be applied to diabetes care, and she offers specific actions providers can take to begin to address disparities in their own practice as well as broader public policy initiatives.
