SAN DIEGO — In this video exclusive, Jonathan D. Leffert, MD, talks with Joshua D. Safer, MD, FACP, FACE, and Vin Tangpricha, MD, PhD about clinical and political challenges in caring for transgender patients.

Leffert is managing partner at North Texas Endocrine Center and past president of AACE. He is also an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member. Safer is an Endocrine Today Editorial Board Member, who is executive director of the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery at Mount Sinai Health System and professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Tangpricha is professor of medicine in the division of endocrinology, metabolism and lipids at Emory University School of Medicine.

“We as endocrinologists should be more comfortable [caring for this patient population],” Safer said. “This is an area where we already have strength. Other gaps are in the realm of the evidence base for some of our choices, and that again is a role for us as endocrinologists in this field to lead the way.”
