VIDEO: Pregnancy following bariatric surgery remains ‘high risk’

In this video exclusive, Healio | Endocrine Today Co-editor Sangeeta R. Kashyap, MD, talks with Shelley Ehrlich, MD, ScD, HPH, about pregnancy outcomes for teens who have undergone bariatric and metabolic surgery.
Kashyap is a physician scientist in the Endocrinology Institute at Cleveland Clinic and professor of medicine at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Ehrlich is assistant professor in the department of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center and the University of Cincinnati.
Ehrlich and colleagues followed participants from the Teen-LABS study and saw pregnancy outcomes similar to those among women with obesity, including a 50% rate of Caesarean section and high rates of gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and preterm delivery.
“It’s important to note that pregnancy following bariatric surgery is still a high-risk pregnancy,” Ehrlich said.
She noted that contraception education is a must for women undergoing these procedures.
