Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia was once again named the No. 1 hospital in the country for pediatric diabetes and endocrinology by the U.S. News & World Report 2021-2022 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings.
According to a press release from U.S. News & World Report, the Best Children’s Hospitals methodology measures patient outcomes, including mortality and infection rates, as well as available clinical resources and compliance with best practices.
This year, the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings featured expanded offerings that include state rankings and multi-state regional rankings; CHOP was also ranked top hospital for the Mid-Atlantic region.
“This distinction reflects the extraordinary commitment each and every member of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes has towards fulfilling our mission to provide outstanding, comprehensive, evidence-based, and compassionate clinical care to our patients,” Diva D. De León-Crutchlow, MD, MSCE, chief of the division of endocrinology and diabetes center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), told Healio. “We believe in the importance of individualized and patient-centered care and our programs are designed keeping this approach in mind bringing a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, dietitians, community health care workers, and other specialists together.”
The list ranked 50 centers in 10 pediatric specialties: cancer, cardiology and heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology and gastrointestinal surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and lung surgery, and urology. The top-ranked hospitals for pediatric diabetes and endocrine care in the 2020-2021 report:

- Boston Children’s Hospital
- Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center
- Children’s Hospital Colorado
- Texas Children’s Hospital
- Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital
- UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh

- Children’s National Hospital.
For the eighth consecutive year, Boston Children’s Hospital topped the Best Children’s Hospitals Honor Roll, which honors institutions that “deliver exceptionally high-quality care across multiple specialties,” according to the release. CHOP ranked second in this year’s Honor Roll rankings.
To calculate the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings, U.S. News gathered relevant data from children’s hospitals in early 2020 and from pediatric physicians and other health care organizations in 2021; because of the pandemic, data collection from children’s hospitals was not repeated in 2021.
“Shortly after a national emergency was declared in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, our team quickly pivoted to offer the same high-standard and multidisciplinary diabetes care virtually, which was made possible by the technology and virtual platforms that CHOP put in place,” León-Crutchlow told Healio. “Our diabetes teams and patients demonstrated an extraordinary degree of flexibility, innovation, and adaptability, which resulted in uninterrupted care. I have never been prouder of working at CHOP than during this moment of crisis.”
