VIDEO: Women with hyperthyroidism require preconception counseling
LOS ANGELES — In this video exclusive, Caroline Nguyen, MD, assistant professor of clinical medicine at Keck School of Medicine at USC, offers considerations for managing hyperthyroidism in pregnancy, in particular, associations of propylthiouracil with fetal malformations.
“Our goal should be to avoid anti-thyroid drug use in the early part of pregnancy,” Nguyen said. Because many women do not yet know they are pregnant during the period of teratogenicity, preconception counseling is essential and all sexually active women with Grave’s hyperthyroidism should use contraception, she said.
