Endocrine Society highlights new strategic plan, member outreach

NEW ORLEANS — This year’s Endocrine Society Annual Meeting reflects a renewed effort to expand the organization’s outreach and membership through new initiatives and strategic partnerships, according to society president Susan J. Mandel, MD, MPH.
“I am truly thrilled to welcome you to a meeting of exploration and collegiality, filled with outstanding science, state-of-the-art clinical care, and lots of opportunities to network and have fun,” Mandel, director of clinical endocrinology and diabetes at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, said during the meeting’s opening presentation. “I do hope you will take some time to enjoy the southern cuisine and the jazz.”
The Endocrine Society’s Annual Meeting was last held in New Orleans in 2004, Mandel said, and much has changed since.
“Since then, our society and the world have changed,” Mandel said. “Through our strategic planning process, our society has continued to evolve and lead.”
This year, the society’s Governor’s Task Force provided new recommendations as part of an effort to implement a new strategic plan unveiled in 2018. Those recommendations, Mandel said, recognize that governance must support the changing needs of society members and the world, and allow members to continue to advance a collective mission.
Highlights of the Governor’s Task Force report include:
- expanding the current professional profile to better capture the spectrum of members’ career roles;
- providing comprehensive leadership training for all career stages; and
- expanding the nominating committee to select a balanced, effective, diverse and global leadership team.
“We need your engagement,” Mandel said. “The bylaws changes require membership ratification. This is about the future of our society so we can implement our vision and achieve our goals together. Voting begins April 2.”
To align with the new goals, the 2019 meeting planning committee designed a program around three key concepts, according to meeting chair Gregory A. Brent, MD: stimulate exploration, enrich the community and enhance the understanding of the fundamentals.
“The annual meeting steering committee embraced these concepts as they developed an outstanding program that showcases cutting-edge research and guidance for the most significant clinical challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine diseases,” Brent, professor of medicine and physiology in the division of endocrinology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said during the opening presentation. “On behalf of the entire society, I wish everyone a truly wonderful meeting over the next four days at ENDO 2019.” – by Regina Schaffer
