On November 2, CMS issued the 2018 Physician Fee Schedule final rule finalizing policies to implement the Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program expanded model, a structured intervention with the goal of preventing progression to type 2 diabetes in eligible Medicare beneficiaries with prediabetes.

The new model will be added on April 1, 2018.

The Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) will give eligible beneficiaries access to a community-based intervention aimed at preventing progression to type 2 diabetes. The intervention will consist of 16 intensive “core” sessions of a CDC-approved curriculum over 6 months giving training for long-term dietary change, increased physical activity and behavior strategies for weight control. Less intensive follow-up meetings will occur monthly after completion of the core sessions and the primary goal of the expanded model is at least 5% weight loss by the participants.
