ObesityWeek 2017 will offer attendees a mix of the latest obesity sciences and treatment research, featuring experts addressing everything from nutrition and metabolism to childhood obesity and important public health policy developments.

“ObesityWeek, the largest conference on obesity in the world, brings together world-renowned experts for diverse educational opportunities, networking events and scientific exploration,” Allen S. Levine, PhD, FTOS, president of The Obesity Society (TOS), told Endocrine Today. “We offer cutting-edge content with the broadest, most comprehensive bench-to-bedside and continuum of care content — basic science, prevention, clinical application and surgical intervention.”

The 5th annual ObesityWeek, a combination of the 34th American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) meeting and the 35th annual meeting of TOS, will bring together nearly 4,500 attendees to take in scientific presentations, keynote lectures and networking events, as well as postgraduate courses offered for surgeons and integrated health members. The meeting takes place Oct. 29 to Nov. 2 at the Gaylord National Resort and Conventional Center in National Harbor, Maryland.

“This year’s TOS Annual Meeting will boast double the basic science sessions, double the population health policy, health care policy and public health policy symposia, and triple the late-breaking abstracts from 2016,” Levine said. “I look forward to all of the new, cutting-edge science and applications of such science to aid in our understanding of the etiology and treatment of obesity as a disease.”

Jeffrey Zigman , MD, PhD, FTOS, TOS program committee chair for ObesityWeek said that although there is no specific theme for ObesityWeek, the meeting will offer key topics from different perspectives throughout the conference.

“In particular, physical activity and exercise and dietary interventions will be covered from the perspectives of metabolism and integrative physiology, neuroscience, intervention and clinical studies; population health; clinical and professional practice; health care policy; and public health policy,” he said. “There will be many outstanding sessions over the course of the conference.”

According to Levine, the field of obesity research and medicine is a relatively small, yet vital community.
in order to prevent and cure,” he said. “Whether we build on each other’s research, work together on position statements, share policy goals or develop universal best clinical practices, we are constantly collaborating and cooperating.”

ObesityWeek offers nurses, dieticians, mental health professionals, physicians, surgeons and researchers the opportunity to connect and share their specialized expertise and concentrations.

“Our attempts to understand and combat this disease require an integrative and holistic approach predicated on the active cooperation of the professionals in this field,” Levine said. “TOS is proud to coproduce ObesityWeek with ASBMS each year to offer this 360-degree approach to obesity.” – by Amber Cox
